A 31-year-old California man has been formally charged with attempting to assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump following a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, could face life in prison if convicted.

Allen appeared in federal court wearing a blue jail-issued uniform, with his hands restrained behind his back. Prosecutors allege he carried out a planned attack during the high-profile event, which gathers journalists, politicians, and public figures annually. According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn Ballantine, Allen “attempted to assassinate the president of the United States,” highlighting the severity of the charges.

Authorities say Allen transported multiple weapons across state lines, including a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, a .38 caliber semi-automatic handgun, and three knives. Evidence presented in court revealed that a shotgun shell casing was recovered, suggesting the weapon had been fired during the incident. In addition to attempted assassination, Allen faces charges related to illegal firearm transport and discharging a weapon during a violent crime.

Investigators believe Allen was motivated by political grievances. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the suspect referred to Trump as a “traitor” in an email sent to family members prior to the attack. In the same message, Allen allegedly described himself as a “Friendly Federal Assassin” and outlined intentions to target senior government officials.

The shooting caused panic at the Washington Hilton, forcing attendees to seek cover while Secret Service agents quickly removed President Trump from the scene. A Secret Service officer was reportedly shot in the chest but survived due to a ballistic vest. Officials have labeled the response a success in preventing further harm.

Allen, who claims to hold a master’s degree in computer science and has no prior criminal record, remains in custody pending further hearings. Prosecutors have indicated that additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues. The incident adds to growing concerns over political violence and security threats facing U.S. leaders.
