India’s industrial production grew 6.7% year over year in September as mining contracted 6.2%, with manufacturing and electricity output continuing to expand, government estimates show.
The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) reached 124.3, up from 116.5 in September 2025, according to quick estimates released Oct. 28 by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The September figures are preliminary, based on an 86.5% weighted response rate, and may be revised. August’s growth rate was revised to 7.8% from the earlier estimate of 8%.
Mining and quarrying output fell for a second month, after declining 4.6% in August. Non-metallic minerals dropped 29.2% in September, while metallic minerals rose 14% and fuel minerals increased 2.1%. Mining output had grown 15.7% in September 2025. Devendra Pant, chief economist at India Ratings and Research, told The Economic Times that a high comparison base and weaker mining activity contributed to the slowdown.
Manufacturing, which accounts for 76.062% of the index’s weight, expanded 7.6%, down from 8.6% in August. Seventeen of 23 manufacturing groups grew. Electrical equipment output rose 33.9%, motor vehicles increased 19% and rubber and plastics products grew 19.9%.
Electricity and gas supply rose 11.2%. Electricity generation increased 12.6%, while gas supply fell 6.7%. Water supply, sewerage and waste management grew 5.8%. By use, intermediate goods rose 12.2% and capital goods increased 10.4%; consumer non-durables grew 1.4%.
For April-September 2026, industrial production increased 6.8%, compared with 4.4% in April-September 2025. The Economic Times also reported that ICRA forecast India’s gross domestic product would grow more than 7% in July-September. MoSPI scheduled the October IIP figures for release on Nov. 30.
