Intel and AMD have been competitors in the tech industry, but it seems the two companies have decided to put aside their differences and partner up to revolutionize the PC gaming industry. This collaboration will reportedly result in an Intel CPU equipped with a Radeon graphics chip for a leaner, thinner gaming laptop.
Gaming laptops have always struggled with maintaining a balance between performance and portability. The more powerful the unit, the bulkier it gets. The team-up between Intel and AMD is intended to change this game by bringing ultra-powerful gaming performance in ultra-thin laptops, PC World reports. By doing so, both companies would have a leg up over competitors like Nvidia.
Supposedly, the chip that both companies are working on will be the 8th generation of Intel’s H-series chips. These processors will reportedly manage the power of the module for better battery preservation. These chips are also set to hit the market in 2018.
As for which company approached which first, it would appear that Intel took the initiative. Both companies confirmed that this was Intel’s project and AMD is simply providing a Radeon chip that comes as a single core with a custom design.
As PC Gamer notes, however, this doesn’t mean that Intel is getting rid of its entry-level processors entirely. These new cores will be at the higher end of the spectrum such as Intel’s Iris Pro, so customers can expect to pay quite a bit for units equipped with these chips.
In terms of sheer performance and muscle, Nvidia’s GPUs will still likely have a huge edge, especially with its beefier 10-series products. However, this partnership between AMD and Intel will lead to more affordable options that still offer high performance. Basically, the new Intel H-series chips will offer better value per dollar in terms of performance than what laptops what Nvidia GPUs will be able to provide.
