Mozilla Firefox is currently one of the most popular web browsers around. Although it can’t compare to Google Chrome, it has a sizeable following of its own. However, it’s no secret that Mozilla wants to expand its influence and gather more users. Apparently, one of the ways it plans to do this is through a voice-controlled browser called Scout.
An all-hands internal meeting is scheduled for this week where the main topic is apparently this new Scout project that the Mozilla team was working on. It would seem that the focus of the talk, as far as the listing notes, is the matter of the architecture and key components of the project.
“With the Scout app, we start to explore browsing and consuming content with voice. This talk will discuss the architecture and key components needed for a voice platform, the required capabilities of those components and the challenges of working with the limitations and confines of existing platforms,” the listing’s description reads.
At this point, there is still too little information to draw a definitive conclusion as to what Scout is going to look like in its final form. Smart assistants already exist to help provide users with the ability to search for things online using voice commands. However, they do still have limitations.
On the other hand, a browser that comes with voice command could have substantial implications for Mozilla, CNET reports. A browser-specific architecture that involves vocal interpretation can help users with vision issues. The same goes for those who can’t type for one reason or another. Even users who are simply too lazy to type would likely find the concept of the Scout quite appealing.
In response to questions regarding this new development, Mozilla simply said that the project was in its early stages. As such, it has nothing definitive to say, as of now.
