Ali Nikzad, Iran’s first deputy parliament speaker, linked Republican setbacks to the war with Iran after Democrats took control of both chambers in Tuesday’s U.S. midterms, France 24 reported.

Nikzad told lawmakers Wednesday that Washington’s pressure on Tehran had failed, the outlet reported. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf had also presented Democratic gains as a sign of U.S. opposition to the war, according to France 24’s earlier coverage.

Anadolu Ajansı previously reported Nikzad’s view that U.S. sanctions and pressure had not weakened Iran, along with his warning that military action in the Strait of Hormuz would draw a “crushing response.” EconoTimes covered those remarks previously. Anadolu Ajansı also reported that the United States and Israel launched the war against Iran in February.
