In the age of viral misinformation, a recent online rumor claiming Elon Musk is "officially buying McDonald’s" sent social media into a frenzy. The claims, propagated through YouTube videos, TikTok posts, and Facebook shares, alleged that the billionaire entrepreneur was acquiring the fast-food giant—a story that captivated millions. However, fact-checkers have confirmed that the rumor is entirely false.
How the Rumor Spread Like Wildfire
The frenzy began in mid-October 2024, when a YouTube channel named Voyager published a video titled “Elon Musk: ‘I am officially buying McDonald’s.’” The video garnered over 273,000 views and featured a misleading thumbnail of Musk alongside McDonald’s employees. TikTok and Facebook users quickly amplified the story, with some videos accumulating hundreds of thousands of views. The narrative seemed to gain credibility through repeated exposure, despite a lack of verifiable sources.
Even more confusing, the videos incorporated AI-generated images and audio, further convincing viewers of the rumor’s legitimacy. These generative AI tools, powered by simple text prompts, created fabricated visuals and narration that were convincing enough to fool many.
The Truth Behind the Hype
Fact-checking organizations like PolitiFact and Check Your Fact were quick to debunk the claims. No credible reports or statements from Musk or McDonald’s confirmed the alleged acquisition. In fact, the videos were part of a growing trend of using AI to create sensational, yet entirely false, content.
Additionally, the Voyager YouTube channel has a history of misleading content. It previously spread false claims about Musk launching a motor home priced under $17,000 in 2025 and another video alleging Musk bought General Motors. Both rumors were similarly debunked.
Musk’s Only Connection to McDonald’s
While Musk has no plans to buy McDonald’s, he has referenced the company humorously in the past. In April 2022, Musk tweeted a joke about fixing McDonald’s notoriously unreliable ice cream machines, a quip that further fueled the satirical rumor mill. A year later, a parody article on SpaceXMania.com titled “Elon Musk Teases Potential McDonald’s Acquisition to Fix Their Ice Cream Machines” added another layer of confusion. Although clearly labeled as satire, many users mistook the article for real news.
The Role of AI in Spreading Fake News
The McDonald’s acquisition rumor highlights a broader issue: the growing misuse of AI tools to spread misinformation. By generating realistic imagery and narration, bad actors can quickly craft and distribute convincing, yet entirely fake, stories. This trend poses challenges for platforms attempting to combat misinformation and for audiences seeking reliable information.
Public Reaction and Lessons Learned
As the false claims were debunked, many social media users expressed frustration over the ease with which fake news spreads online. The incident underscores the importance of verifying information, especially when sensational stories appear too good—or strange—to be true.
For now, Elon Musk remains focused on his ventures with Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and X, with no credible indication of him entering the fast-food industry. Meanwhile, McDonald’s continues to operate independently, unaffected by the viral chaos.
