Israel and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and curbing its regional influence, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated after meeting U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Jerusalem. Highlighting Iran as a key threat, Netanyahu emphasized the nations' joint stance against Tehran's nuclear ambitions and regional aggression.
Rubio condemned Iran for supporting terrorist groups and destabilizing the Middle East. Iran, which claims its uranium enrichment is for peaceful purposes, backs groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, collectively known as the "Axis of Resistance."
Since the Gaza war began in October 2023, Israel has targeted top Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, with both Israel and Iran engaging in retaliatory strikes. Netanyahu, with U.S. President Donald Trump’s support, expressed confidence in defeating Iran's threats. Trump recently lifted a block on MK-84 bomb shipments to Israel, previously imposed by President Joe Biden.
Rubio asserted that Hamas must be dismantled for peace in Gaza. Amid a fragile ceasefire, efforts continue to extend the truce, which has seen the release of 19 Israeli hostages and five Thai nationals in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The conflict has resulted in over 48,000 deaths in Gaza and widespread displacement.
Trump's controversial plan to redevelop Gaza into an international resort, displacing Palestinians, has sparked backlash and comparisons to the 1948 Nakba. Rubio praised the boldness of Trump’s vision while Arab states propose alternative recovery plans.
In Syria, Assad's fall to Islamist Ahmed al-Sharaa raises concerns about replacing one destabilizing force with another. Rubio stressed the need for careful U.S. strategy as Syria faces reconstruction challenges. The situation remains complex, with global powers closely monitoring developments.
