At least two Palestinians were killed and 12 others were wounded after an Israeli airstrike struck a crowded cafe in Gaza on Sunday, according to local health officials. The cafe, located near Gaza’s emergency seaport, was reportedly filled with people celebrating public holidays when the attack occurred.
Israeli authorities did not immediately comment on the strike. The incident adds to growing concerns over the stability of the Gaza ceasefire, which was brokered in October with support from U.S. President Donald Trump. Despite the agreement, Israeli military operations in Gaza have continued, raising fears of a renewed escalation in the conflict.
Negotiations between Israel and Hamas remain stalled as both sides struggle to advance the second phase of the ceasefire deal. Key issues include Hamas’ disarmament and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of the Gaza Strip. The ongoing deadlock has complicated efforts to secure a lasting peace and improve humanitarian conditions in the region.
Although the truce reduced large-scale fighting, territorial control remains divided. Israel currently maintains control over more than half of Gaza, while Hamas governs a limited section of the coastal enclave. The cafe targeted in the latest strike was situated near a floating dock that serves as an emergency seaport and was originally intended as a temporary facility.
According to Gaza health officials, approximately 900 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire took effect. The figures do not differentiate between civilians and combatants. During the same period, Israel’s military reported that four Israeli soldiers were killed in attacks carried out by Palestinian militants.
The latest violence highlights the fragile nature of the Gaza ceasefire and underscores the challenges facing negotiators as efforts continue to prevent further bloodshed and reach a broader political settlement between Israel and Hamas.
