DENVER, Jan. 12, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Janus Capital Group, Inc. (NYSE:JNS) today announced several promotions and a portfolio manager addition. Jean Barnard, CFA, the current communications sector team lead, will be promoted to co-portfolio manager of the Janus Fund and corresponding Janus Large Cap Growth Strategies. Nick Schommer, CFA, will be promoted to co-portfolio manager of the Janus Forty Fund and associated Concentrated Growth Strategies, and Ethan Lovell will be promoted to co-portfolio manager of the Janus Global Life Sciences Fund and corresponding accounts.
In addition, Denny Fish will return to Janus and serve as co-portfolio manager of the Janus Global Technology Fund and the communications sector team lead.
“At Janus, we are committed to attracting and retaining the best investment talent available to drive significant value for our clients,” said Enrique Chang, Chief Investment Officer of Equities and Asset Allocation. “We are pleased to recognize Jean, Nick and Ethan’s significant contributions to the firm and our clients with well-deserved promotions and to welcome Denny back to Janus.”
Jean will join Barney Wilson as co-portfolio manager of the Janus Fund and corresponding Janus Large Cap Growth Strategies. The two have worked together for more than five years in various capacities and have a similar investment philosophy and process. Jean’s promotion to co-portfolio manager is a natural career progression and is reflective of her significant contributions to the investment team. She will step down from her role as sector team lead but will continue to cover U.S. large cap communications stocks as an analyst.
Prior to her appointment as co-portfolio manager of the Janus Fund, Jean was Janus’ equity research analyst primarily focusing on the communications sector globally and assistant portfolio manager of the Janus Fund. She joined Janus in 1992 and has 23 years of financial industry experience. Jean received her bachelor of arts degree in economics and political science from Yale University, where she graduated with distinction.
Nick will join Doug Rao as co-portfolio manager of the Janus Forty Fund and associated Concentrated Growth Strategies. Nick and Doug have worked together for nearly eight years, dating back to their experience prior to Janus. Nick’s promotion is reflective of the existing partnership between Doug and Nick over that time period, as well as Nick’s significant contributions to the positive performance of the strategy. We do not expect any meaningful change to the way the fund is managed.
Until the co-portfolio manager appointment on the Janus Forty Fund, Nick served as equity research analyst focusing on the financials and consumer sectors, as well as assistant portfolio manager on the Janus Forty Fund. Prior to joining Janus in June 2013, Nick was an associate portfolio manager at Thornburg Investment Management, a position he held since January 2012. Prior to that, he was a research analyst at Marsico Capital Management for more than four years where he led the coverage of the financial services sector on a global basis. Previous to his investment management career, Nick served as a Captain in the U.S. Army, serving in both Iraq and Kuwait. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for exceptionally distinguished service during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Nick received his bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he was recognized as a distinguished cadet and Phi Kappa Phi. He received his MBA in finance from UCLA Anderson School of Management where he was a Student Investment Fund Fellow. Nick has eight years of financial industry experience.
Ethan will join Andy Acker as co-portfolio manager of the Janus Global Life Sciences Fund and associated accounts. Ethan brings over 20 years of experience covering the healthcare sector to his new role. Ethan’s promotion is a reflection of his outstanding performance as an analyst and assistant portfolio manager. Ethan will maintain his analyst responsibilities, but will broaden his role to thought leadership, portfolio construction and stock selection for the portfolio. Prior to joining Janus as a research analyst in August 2007, Ethan was a director at ClearBridge Advisors covering companies in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries. Previously, he was managing director and founding partner of Saranac Capital, LP, where he was the health care sector portfolio manager. Ethan also worked at Salomon Brothers Asset Management as a director, then managing director of the health care team. He began his career at Bear, Stearns & Co. as an equity research analyst covering biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and life science tools companies. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Bowdoin College with a double major in chemistry and economics and his MBA from Tulane University. Ethan has 21 years of financial industry experience.
Denny will join Brad Slingerlend, CFA, and Brinton Johns as co-portfolio manager on the Janus Global Technology Fund. As co-portfolio manager and communications sector team leader, Denny’s primary responsibilities will be idea generation, investment debate and coverage allocation. Denny will work closely with Brinton, who is co-portfolio manager and technology sector team lead, as the technology and communications sectors are ever changing and increasingly blending in today’s environment and will continue to do so into the future. Brad, lead portfolio manager, will be responsible for the Janus Global Technology Fund portfolio construction, risk management and idea generation.
Denny returns to Janus from RS Investments, where he served as investment analyst and co-portfolio manager focused on the RS value domestic equity strategies. Prior to RS Investments, he was an equity research analyst on the Janus technology sector team, including coverage of hardware, software and services companies. Prior to joining Janus in October 2007, Denny was director and senior research analyst at JMP Securities covering software and worked at Oracle Corporation as a technology sales manager. He received his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois and his MBA from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. He has 12 years of financial industry experience.
