SAN DIEGO, May 21, 2017 -- Jeffers Chiropractic & Sports Injuries has announced their recognition of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and is releasing information on the importance of chiropractic care in sports to mark the occasion. When it comes to running and other sports, chiropractic care isn't used only to treat existing injuries - it's also important for preventing them from happening.
Chiropractic care is typically thought of as something that is used to treat injuries. This is often the case, and it's quite effective at reducing pain and stiffness that result from injury-related problems with the spine, neck, and joints. However, Jeffers Chiropractic & Sports Injuries reports that athletes can often prevent these injuries by getting chiropractic treatment in advance of their games or other activities.
"Many sports injuries only happen because the athlete already had a hidden problem with spinal alignment, posture, gait, or form. These problems cause the physical stresses of activity to be improperly distributed throughout the body, and in turn, this incorrect force distribution causes painful and debilitating errors. By coming in for alignment before participating in sports, athletes help ensure that forces are properly distributed and therefore less likely to cause injury," said Dr. Keith Jeffers of Jeffers Chiropractic & Sports Injuries.
Not all preventive treatment involves spinal realignment. A good, professional massage can also be a great help before certain sports. Golf, basketball, and other athletic activities require the body to be supple enough to make specific stretches without strain. Massage warms and loosens the muscles, so when it is done just before a sport begins, participants are more likely to be sufficiently limber.
"With some sports, it's also a good idea to stop in for a chiropractic session just after the activity ends. Runners and sports players recover much more quickly when everything is brought back to alignment right away. In professional sports, some athletes are treated directly after games. Amateurs can gain the same benefits by scheduling chiropractic treatments after their own activities," Dr. Jeffers said.
Of course, nothing can prevent all sports injuries. When something does start to hurt, athletes choose a chiropractor to speed healing and address root causes of the problem. Sports injuries are especially responsive to chiropractic care since they typically involve spinal alignment and the way the body moves by way of its biochemical processes. Chiropractors also have a number of other treatments at their disposal to create a comprehensive recovery plan.
