Joe Biden held his first press conference as president, discussing the pandemic, China, and the Senate filibuster. Biden was also pressed on whether or not he plans to run for a second term.
Not long into his presidency and Biden has already been pressed on whether he plans to run for a second term. During the conference, Biden said he plans to run for reelection in 2024 and expects that his vice president Kamala Harris would remain his running mate. At 78 years old, Biden is the oldest president to be elected in the US, and by the 2024 elections, should he win a second term, he would be 81 by that time.
“Yes my plan is to run for reelection,” said Biden. “That’s my expectation.”
Biden is no stranger to serving more than one term, having spent decades in the Senate and two terms as vice president under Barack Obama.
Biden was also pressed on the military troops that are currently stationed in Afghanistan, to which he said that meeting the deadline of May 1 to withdraw the troops would be a challenge. The withdrawal was a result of an agreement the Trump administration settled with the Taliban in 2020.
“It’s going to be hard to meet the May 1 deadline,” said Biden. “It is not my intention to stay there for a long time. But the question is how and under what circumstances,” the president added. “But we are not staying there a long time.”
Biden’s comments follow the visit by Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin to Afghanistan this week. Lloyd reportedly met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and top US Commander in Afghanistan, Army General Scott Miller. When asked if the US troops will still be in the region in 2022, Biden said that it may be the case.
Previous reports revealed that Biden originally planned to keep the troops in Afghanistan until November instead of their withdrawal by May 1. 2,500 troops remain in Afghanistan to this day, where there is American presence since a US-backed effort to get rid of the Taliban in 2001 for keeping Al Qaeda militants responsible for the September 11 attacks.
