FREEPORT, Ill., March 29, 2018 -- More than four years ago, members of Faith Center Freeport led by its Pastor, Michael Sowell, and who in his own words “decided to start Joseph’s Pantry to help the community of Freeport fight hunger.” The pantry opened its doors on April 8, 2013, in the basement of the church located at 203 W Stephenson St., in Freeport. The storage was a mere closet back then and now over five years has grown to take over the entire basement for food storage and distribution.

The pantry “served seven families on its first day and within a matter of weeks, we served 92 families”, says Bindy Lillge, who is the pantry’s volunteer director. “As we enter our fifth year, I am so humbled by what we have been able to accomplish coming out of a church basement.”
What sets Joseph’s Pantry apart from any others in Freeport and surrounding areas is clear empowerment, education, compassion, and growth, Godly growth. The pantry brings in educators, health professionals, law enforcement officers, counselors and other speakers to provide their expertise to the clients for free. Bindy is pleased with the pantry being the first in Freeport to have a one on one personal interest in each client that caters to their unique situation.
To commemorate this accomplishment, the pantry is embarking on a crowdfunding campaign to ensure long-term sustainability. The pantry has also outgrown its current space in the basement and is seeking a building of its own, a new truck and self-sufficiency. Joseph’s Pantry has been and continues to be financed by the church.
Those interested in donating can stay tuned to Joseph Pantry’s Facebook page and website at www.josephspantry.org.
