Jeon Jung-kook – better known as BTS’ Jungkook – made headlines recently after tweeting a sweet message to upcoming South Korean boyband TXT. The post in question had the 21-year-old acknowledging that he is TXT’s “hyung,” no longer making him Big Hit Entertainment’s “maknae.”
For those unaware of the Korean words above, hyung means “older brother” and “maknae” is typically reserved for a group’s youngest member. Prior to the formation of TXT, Jungkook was the youngest member of Big Hit Entertainment, making him the “baby” of the family. And of the fans, as well, TeenVogue reported.
But with TXT entering the picture and Jungkook acknowledging them as their juniors, he has essentially relinquished the maknae label and passing it down to the younger guys. This meant that he’s no longer the precious baby of the fan base, which many are considering as the end of an era.
Following Jungkook’s tweet, fans were quick to post their emotional reactions on the platform. Some are proud that their maknae is growing up fast, while others are adamantly insisting that Jungkook will remain their baby despite the acknowledgment.
For their part, TXT thanked their seniors for showing them support and said that they will do their best moving forward. Meanwhile, Jungkook and the rest of the BTS are scheduled to perform on May 4 at the Los Angeles Rose Bowl Stadium. The concert is part of the group’s “Love Yourself: Speak Yourself” world tour that has been taking the international scene by storm.
Although they’ve been famous in South Korea and amass a large following in other Asian countries, it is only recently that they gained ground internationally. Their hit singles “DNA,” “Fake Love,” and “Idol” were among the songs that exploded worldwide. The seven-member boy band also managed to attend the 2019 Grammys where Jungkook went viral after thanking their hardcore fans for all the love and support that they receive.
