Khamenei Funeral Draws Thousands as Iran Stages Nationwide Week of Mourning

Khamenei Funeral Draws Thousands as Iran Stages Nationwide Week of Mourning.

Iran has begun a week-long series of funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with thousands gathering in Tehran to pay tribute to the late Supreme Leader. His body lay in state on Friday as senior clerics, government officials, military leaders, foreign dignitaries, and supporters visited to offer prayers and respects.

Authorities plan to hold large public processions across Iran before Khamenei is buried in Mashhad on Thursday. The funeral route also includes ceremonies in the holy city of Qom and the Iraqi Shi’ite centers of Najaf and Kerbala, highlighting his religious significance and Iran’s close ties with regional allies.

The coffin, unveiled to mourners on Thursday night, was placed inside a major prayer hall dedicated to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Draped with symbols associated with Iran’s revolutionary ideals, it was surrounded by black mourning flags as grieving supporters gathered in large numbers.

The funeral comes at a pivotal time for the Islamic Republic following the conflict that claimed Khamenei’s life. Iranian authorities have tightened security across Tehran, deploying police, military units, and Basij forces while warning against any attacks during the mourning period. Officials are providing transportation, lodging, and food to encourage mass participation in the ceremonies.

Despite the display of unity, Iran continues to face major political and economic challenges. Years of sanctions, economic hardship, and repeated anti-government protests have fueled internal tensions, while questions remain about the country’s future leadership. Mojtaba Khamenei, the new Supreme Leader, has not appeared publicly since reportedly being wounded in the same strike that killed his father.

Among those attending the ceremonies were senior Iranian leaders, including the president, parliament speaker, and foreign minister, along with international representatives from Russia, China, Pakistan, and Iraq. Families of Hezbollah figures Hassan Nasrallah and Imad Mughniyeh also attended.

Following Monday’s main procession in Tehran, the funeral events will continue in Qom, Najaf, and Kerbala before concluding with Khamenei’s burial near the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, one of Iran’s holiest religious sites.
