Friendly fire in an online, multiplayer game is a tricky topic. Some gamers love it while others can do without it. In Epic Games’ multiplayer title Fortnite, however, the developers seem to have come to the conclusion that it’s not an asset worth offering. The studio just disabled the feature, which should make killing teammates by trolls that much harder.
While the ability to damage or even kill teammates adds that extra level of intensity and immersion in games, it also allows bad gamers to start killing the people in their group if they feel that they are performing badly. These trolls will now have a much harder time making life hell for others after Epic disabled the feature due to the huge number of complaints filed, Bleeding Cool News reports.
The studio provided f information on the matter via Reddit page, which discussed the issue of friendly fire being disabled. Apparently, the feedback from players complaining about unsportsmanlike attitudes from terrible teammates was quite overwhelming, which is why directly causing damage to team members is no longer possible.
The response was actually varied, with some expressing happiness over the developers’ decision, while others suggested to apply the changes only to bullets and leave explosives dangerous for both sides. Then there was the inevitable hailstorm of complaints from so-called hardcore gamers who don’t want friendly fire to be disabled.
As Comicbook.com points out, having the ability to damage teammates did force players to be more vigilant about who they were shooting at. This added an extra layer of fun and excitement to an already thrilling game.
It’s just unfortunate that a few bad eggs started abusing the feature whenever things started looking grim for them. Losing is simply not an excuse to act like the grossest example of a childish gamer throwing a tantrum just because they didn’t get their way.
