LG Chem Ltd. has started mass-producing single-crystal cathodes, advanced high-nickel materials designed to enhance electric vehicle (EV) battery power. First shipments are expected to clients next month, paving the way for improved EV performance and longer lifespan.
These cathodes are next-gen high-nickel cathode materials that are made with a single crystal structure that amplifies the power of electric vehicle batteries. Moreover, single-crystal cathode materials are created with different metals, including cobalt, nickel, and manganese.
These are fused together to make a one-body structure which has been discovered as a key solution to prolong the lifespan and capacity of EV batteries. Yonhap News Agency reported that LG Chem further explained that as the single-crystal cathodes can boost the energy density, it makes electric vehicles perform better - by over 10% at least.
In any case, the first batch of deliverables is being manufactured in LG Chem’s plant in Cheongju, which is located some 112 kilometers from the southern part of Seoul. The chemical unit of the LG Group is also planning to increase the production lines of the single-crystal cathode in its manufacturing facility in the city of Gumi, as it aims to make 50,000 tons of the cathodes per year.
In February this year, LG Chem announced its plans to launch a single crystal cathode for electric vehicle batteries. It was stated then that the company intends to release the single crystal cathode within the year, and apparently, the time has already come.
Finally, according to The Elec, the head of the cathode development team at LG Chem, Jeong Myung Gi, said all the metals involved in making the product not only augment the durability of the cathode, but they believe a single crystal can also lessen gas emissions.
