PORTLAND, Ore., March 13, 2016 -- Dr. Danielle McCary helps pregnant women reduce discomfort and ease delivery with a special prenatal chiropractic method called the Webster Technique.
Just about any woman who has given birth will tell you that pregnancy is a rewarding experience. However, they will also probably relate stories of discomfort—especially during the last trimester when sitting, sleeping, and otherwise trying to move becomes nearly impossible.
Thankfully, one Portland chiropractor is helping female patients alleviate pain and ensure an easier delivery through a special process called the Webster Technique.
During pregnancy, a number of things happen physiologically that can cause discomfort in the back, spine, and pelvis. This is especially true in the later stages when added strain can cause extra pressure on the joints due to the growing size of the fetus, an increase in a woman’s center of gravity, and even chemical changes within the body.
“The Webster Technique is essentially a state-of-the-art adjustment style that aligns the spine, hips, and pelvis in a way that is ideal for both mother and baby,” explains Dr. Danielle McCary of Laurelhurst Chiropractic. “The process is very non-invasive and quite similar to traditional adjustment.”
A special table is used to comfortably accommodate the changing bodies of pregnant patients, and x-rays are never used to ensure the safety of the baby.
Benefits of the Webster Technique include a diminished risk for caesarian section birth and a lower chance of the baby maintaining the breech position. It can also help alleviate pain associated with a sciatica issues during the pregnancy period.
“Essentially these adjustments help align the mother’s body in an optimal position to help aid in pregnancy and delivery.” Dr. McCary further details. “By aligning the pelvis we help create space for the baby and an easier path for delivery, which is really our main goal.”
The Webster Technique is so safe that it is even recommended by the American Pregnancy Association as a leading way to ease discomfort during gestation. However, the group cautions how important it is to find a provider that is specifically trained in working with pregnant patients, including those who are skilled with the Webster Technique.
Only a handful of doctors in the state are certified to handle prenatal chiropractic care, and McCary is proud to be one of them. “It really is a safe way to ensure your comfort and make the overall delivery process easier,” she continues. “Plus, it can even help reduce the amount of time spent in the delivery room.”
