Everyone is already aware of how heavily Nintendo is betting on the success of the Switch in order to rally from the disaster brought about by the failed Wii U. One of the biggest titles that are supposed to sell the console is “Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.” In an unfortunate turn of events, the title just got pirated before it even launched. Images and playthrough videos are already being posted.
Nintendo was already having trouble with numerous leaks with regards to Breath of the Wild for months, which is expected to have some impact on the enjoyment that players feel when the game finally comes out. Now, the company has to contend with a serious security oversight, which allowed certain players to download details about the game way ahead of its release, Kotaku reports.
The vulnerability directly applied to Nintendo’s own servers where, for a brief window of time, images could be snatched, which included those of key items and weapons. Last week, it was also reported that players were able to get BOTW files that allowed them to play the game on hacked Wii U consoles. With all of these details combined, it would seem that Nintendo has a lot to worry about.
As for the video that a YouTube user named LennyReviews posted, the footage contains hours of gameplay and content about Breath of the Wild. The video already garnered over 11,800 views, with quite a few dislikes and disapproving comments.
This trend mirrors what happened with Pokemon Sun and Moon as well, with the two games getting leaked and pirated before its release. Fortunately for Nintendo, the games still sold phenomenally well, even breaking a few records in the process. If all goes well, and high excitement levels about the new Zelda game indicates that it might, the Switch’s flagship title won’t suffer too much because of this incident.
