Lenovo has been trying to build hype around a supposed all-screen smartphone that it was making, and it worked. Since the company began teasing about the new device in May, the tech industry has been looking forward to what this device would actually look like. It turns out that it was all for nothing, however, since the smartphone was just unveiled in Beijing and it still has a notch.
Called the Z5, renders of the device that was released several weeks prior to the unveiling featured a concept device where there was no notch and the screen was stretched right up to the edge of the phone. The final product simply did not live up to the promises of those images at all, The Verge reports.
At 6.2 inches in length and featuring a 19:9 1080p display, the screen of the Z5 is actually admittedly large. It also has thinner bezels than both the Xiaomi Mi 8 and iPhone X, so it at least has that going for it.
Unfortunately, the notch is still a major deal-breaker for a lot of users despite the fact that the smartphone industry has apparently taken the design aspect and just ran with it. There’s also the matter of the specs of the device with a 16MP dual camera, an 8-core Qualcomm processor that was not specified, and 3,300mAh of battery life.
As Engadget notes, while the notch of the Z5 might be smaller than that on any other phone in the market, it doesn’t make up for the fact that the company promised that it wouldn’t be there in the first place. It’s basically an example of disingenuous marketing practices at its worst, which allows customers to believe that certain features would become available but the final product fails to deliver.
It would have been a different matter if Lenovo was simply honest about the issue.
