Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) says the Al-Rashad field has entered production with a ceiling of 50 million cubic feet per day, a project meant to reinforce gas availability for electricity generation and industrial use.

The 50 million cubic feet figure is a capacity measure in the announcement, not a reported daily flow. NOC Chairman Masoud Suleiman announced the opening at a ceremony and said the added gas would help meet demand from power stations and industrial operators.

Al-Rashad sits south of Brega in eastern Libya. The ceremony marked 65 years since the country’s first crude oil shipment moved through the Brega terminal on Oct. 25, 1961.

NOC estimates Libya’s natural gas production at about 2.4 billion cubic feet a day and proven reserves between 53 trillion and 80 trillion cubic feet. At full capacity, Al-Rashad’s ceiling would equal roughly 2% of the national daily production figure cited by the corporation.
