MTV recently announced that for the third installment of the slasher series “Scream,” they are going to do a reboot. According to the network, the reboot will feature a fresh story arc, a new set of cast members to be led by no other than Queen Latifah.
“Actress/rapper/mogul Queen Latifah, plus Shakim Compere and Yaneley Arty, will serve as executive producers for Flavor Unit Entertainment. The production company, owned and operated by Latifah and Compere, boasts big-screen credits including Bringing Down the House, Beauty Shop and The Perfect Holiday. For television, Flavor executive-produced HBO’s Life Support, which earned a Golden Globe for Latifah, and Bessie,” the announcement read.
Brett Matthews, whose work includes “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” with Joss Whedon, will also be on board as the series’ new showrunner.
“Scream,” which was renewed in October last year, only got a six-episode order, which was down from 10 episodes (for the first season) and 13 episodes (for the second season), Deadline noted. Matthews is also the third showrunner for the series, taking the reigns from Jill Blotevogal and Jaime Paglia, who served as showrunners on Season 1, and Michael Gans and Richard Register for Season 2, which showed a ratings decline. However, Harvey and Bob Weinstein under the Dimension TV umbrella will remain on the show as executive producers, along with exec producers Tony DiSanto, Liz Gateley, Marianne Maddalena, Cathy Konrad and the late Wes Craven.
Although details about the new story arc are not available as of the moment, Comicbook.com said that Latifah’s character would be the Season 3’s focal-point.
