EA and BioWare have finally unveiled the first look on the "Mass Effect Legendary Edition," along with the official list of gaming platforms where the collection will launch. Unlike what some fans expected, the developers did not opt for PS5 and Xbox Series X versions, nor are they going to make one. Meanwhile, it appears that the possibility of having a Nintendo Switch port is not off the table yet.
What devs have said about the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch versions
It has been close to a decade since the third main series installment of the "Mass Effect" trilogy was released. Plenty of technological advancements in game development and gaming hardware have been introduced since then, so the arrival of "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" happens with the right timing.
While the remastered collection brings the beloved space trilogy to newer gaming platforms, fans should not expect a full next-gen version. When asked about a potential launch on Xbox Series X and PS5, Project Director Mac Walters told IGN that this undertaking is "just a bridge too far."
It is then best for fans not to expect the remastered trilogy to launch on new-gen consoles, but Walters offered a very understandable explanation as well. The developer is aware of the high expectations that would have resulted from announcing dedicated versions of "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" on PS5 and Xbox Series X. "I think it's more than what we could have pushed [Unreal Engine 3] to do, and again more than we could've done with a true remaster," he added.
Walters then concluded that a PS5 and Xbox Series X launch is best suited for the upcoming "Mass Effect" game. Fans can still play "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" on next-gen consoles through backward compatibility tech available on PS4 and Xbox One.
On the other hand, Walters seemingly had a different tone when addressing the possible release of "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" on Nintendo Switch. Walters told Eurogamer he would personally like to see it happen but reiterated that their priority for this project is to bring the remastered trilogy to PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Maybe a more powerful Nintendo Switch launching sometime in the future would make the decision easier for developers.
'Mass Effect Legendary Edition' release date, pre-orders
The first trailer of "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" premiered Tuesday along with the opening of pre-orders. Fans can now get it on Origin and Steam on PC, and official stores for PS4 and Xbox One. The remastered collection will be released on May 14.
