LG Uplus, the South Korean mobile network operator, owned by LG Corporation, has teamed up with Cheongju University to build a metaverse campus. The company said that students would be able to take classes in the virtual university when they cannot be physically present in school.
As per Aju Business Daily, LG Uplus is targeting young students for non-face-to-face activities for this project. The company’s metaverse university will allow the students of Cheongju University to attend activities and receive advice for their studies and career from education professionals in the school.
Through the virtual Cheongju University campus, students will also get to attend different events, including festivals, games, and even the institution’s entrance ceremonies, even if they are far away from the venue. These activities will all take place in the metaverse world, and the students are participating through their own avatars.
Cheongju University is located in Cheongju, the capital and largest city of North Chungcheong Province in South Korea. It is approximately 112 kilometers or 69 miles away from the southern part of Seoul.
It was said that the partnership between LG Uplus and the university would break the boundary between offline and virtual learning environments. This is achieved through the virtual campus that has been named "Meta-Life." The metaverse university is set to open its doors to students using avatars starting February 2023.
Moreover, some of the things that the students can learn on the virtual campus are the English language. They can avail of this lesson in a specially designed zone in the metaverse that is based on New York City's 42nd Street, which is a major crosstown there.
"As the development of virtual convergence technology increases a desire to experience and learn in digital space, our metaverse platform will serve as a catalyst for the integration of offline and online campuses and the revitalization of student communities," a professor at Cheongju University in charge of education innovation, Hong Young Ki, said in a statement.
LG Uplus and the university will build an environment where two-way communication is activated so that students can enjoy the games, classes, and other activities on the metaverse platform.
