At a time of unrest and an ongoing pandemic, former first lady Michelle Obama hopes to bring some positivity to many, especially the younger generation. Mrs. Obama will be launching a new Netflix series for kids talking about one thing that brings people together; food.
The former first lady took to social media to announce the new series, called “Waffles + Mochi,” and she would be teaming up with a pair of puppets to talk about good food. A press release from the show revealed that the series, with Michelle as a series regular, would be about two puppet best friends who dream of becoming chefs. These main characters would be traveling all over to look for ingredients and cook with celebrities, kids, as well as celebrity chefs and home cooks. The show is produced by the Obamas’ production company Higher Ground as part of its multi-year deal with the streaming service.
“Kids will love it, but I know that adults will also get plenty of laughs -- and some tips from the kitchen,” wrote Mrs. Obama in her Instagram post. “In many ways, this show is an extension of my work to support children’s health as first lady -- and to be quite honest, I wish a program like this had been around when my girls were young.”
Back in May, the former first lady released a documentary version of her 2018 memoir “Becoming,” and this year, she is set to publish a version of her bestseller aimed at younger readers. Penguin Random House announced last week that her young adult-version of “Becoming” as well as a paperback version of the book would be out on shelves on March 2 this year. The paperback version of the book also includes a special introduction by Michelle as well as a book club guide.
“Growing up on the South Side of Chicago in the 1960s and 70s, my parents, Fraser and Marian Robinson, always kept it straight with me and my brother Craig. They never sugarcoated hard truths or presented their reality as anything other than what it was -- because they knew we could handle it. I want to give you all that same respect,” wrote Obama in the new introduction.
