Microsoft unveiled a groundbreaking technology at the Ignite 2023 event. This innovation, known as Azure AI Speech text-to-speech avatar, stands out for its ability to create and animate a lifelike avatar that can speak things the person it resembles didn't say. This tool is now accessible in a public preview.
The process involves uploading images of a person and scripting what the avatar should say. The technology then animates the avatar using a model trained for this purpose. A separate text-to-speech model, which can be prebuilt or custom-trained with the person’s voice, vocalizes the script.
Microsoft emphasizes this tool's potential in creating diverse digital content such as training videos, product introductions, and customer testimonials, simply through text input. These avatars can communicate in multiple languages and, in chatbot scenarios, can engage with customers using advanced AI models like OpenAI’s GPT-3.5.
Ethical and Security Measures
As innovative as this technology is, it does raise concerns about potential misuse. Similar technologies have been exploited to create false propaganda and news. Recognizing these risks, Microsoft has restricted access to custom avatars, offering them only by registration for specific uses.
Another noteworthy development is the introduction of personal voice, part of Microsoft's custom neural voice service. This feature can replicate a user's voice from a one-minute speech sample, offering applications in voice assistants, dubbing, and narrations. To mitigate legal and ethical concerns, Microsoft requires explicit consent for using personal voice and restricts its usage to controlled applications.
Actor Representation and AI
The recent SAG-AFTRA strike highlighted concerns over AI-generated likenesses, leading to agreements for compensating actors for their digital representations. Microsoft has set up guidelines and controls for its AI tools, perhaps more stringent than in other similar applications. This includes consent for voice replication and limitations on the use of these generated voices, particularly in public and shareable content.
