A new trend sees Tesla Cybertrucks sporting mirror finishes, applied by an American polishing company. Despite concerns about potential glare, experts confirm these vehicles are legal to drive on U.S. roads, though they may attract significant attention from other drivers.
Mirror-Finish Tesla Cybertrucks Dazzle on U.S. Roads Amid Glare Concerns
An American polishing company recently gained attention for its ability to apply a mirror finish to a Tesla Cybertruck. It has since completed another model. According to reports (via CarExpert), no laws prohibit their use on US roads.
Business Insider was informed by experts that it is not prohibited to operate a vehicle with a mirror finish, such as the Cybertrucks, which have been extensively detailed by The Polishing Guy, a company based in Joplin, Missouri.
Nevertheless, there are apprehensions regarding how these vehicles can be disruptive.
"Reflective glare may pose the same problem for other drivers as headlight glare, but I am not aware of any research documenting whether this leads to or is associated with increased crash risk," The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) 's principal research officer, David Zuby, disclosed this information to Business Insider via email.
Johnathon Ehsani, the research director at the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, also cautioned against reflected glare. Still, he also stated that a collision is more probable due to an alternative cause.
"The far more plausible case is a crash mechanism that is far more common, that people crash from every single day," he said, "and that's that it might attract attention because it's such an unusual-looking vehicle."
The proprietor of the first deeply-polished example, Tyson Garvin, expressed his dissatisfaction with the stock appearance of the electric pickups that these Tesla Cybertruck drivers have chosen to adopt a mirror finish.
"I didn't like it when I first got it," he said.
"It was actually very dirty when I picked it up. It was a very bad delivery experience. And just the look of it — the dull stainless steel isn't evenly brushed."
Mirror Finish Reduces Fingerprints and Adds Shine to Tesla Cybertrucks, Owners Say
Additionally, he observed that it is less susceptible to fingerprints than the standard finish and becomes more lustrous as it is cleansed.
Mr. Garvin also stated that he had his wife follow him in another vehicle to determine whether it would be hazardous on the road. However, she verified that the tailgate only reflected the ground due to the angle.
The Polishing Guy, a company specializing in semi-trucks, has already received comments from Cybertruck owners who wish to emulate the process and apply a mirror finish.
The silver-colored Cybertrucks are equipped with stainless steel body panels from the factory, and Tesla exclusively provides vinyl covers for those who wish to alter the color.
The electric pickup has undergone numerous inventive modifications. For instance, Zack Nelson of the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything recently applied gold plating to a Cybertruck.
