Moonshot Launches Kimi K3, China's Largest Open-Source AI Model

Moonshot Launches Kimi K3, China's Largest Open-Source AI Model.

Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot has introduced Kimi K3, a new open-source AI model the company describes as the world's largest of its kind, highlighting China's accelerating competition with leading U.S. AI developers. The launch marks another milestone in the global race to build advanced large language models capable of matching frontier AI systems.

According to Moonshot, Kimi K3 features 2.8 trillion parameters, a context window of up to one million tokens, and built-in multimodal capabilities, allowing it to process and understand different forms of data beyond text. The company said the model delivers performance comparable to some of the industry's most advanced AI systems while remaining freely available as an open-source offering.

Moonshot stated that Kimi K3 achieved results close to Anthropic's Fable 5 in several benchmark tests and outperformed OpenAI's GPT 5.6 Sol and GPT 5.5 in selected evaluations. Independent benchmarking platform Arena.AI also ranked Kimi K3 first in a frontend coding benchmark, placing it ahead of Anthropic's Claude Fable 5, which previously held the top position.

The release reflects the rapid progress of China's AI industry, where companies are increasingly narrowing the performance gap with leading American developers. Chinese firms have invested heavily in large language models and open-source AI technologies, supported by government initiatives aimed at strengthening domestic AI innovation and semiconductor development.

Moonshot, backed by major Chinese technology companies Alibaba and Tencent, has expanded its AI research efforts throughout the year. Bloomberg reported last month that the startup is seeking to raise approximately $2 billion at a valuation of around $30 billion, with a potential Hong Kong stock market listing under consideration.

Kimi K3 follows the recent launches of advanced AI models from Chinese companies including Zhipu and DeepSeek, both of which have demonstrated performance approaching that of top U.S. frontier models. As competition intensifies, China's growing ecosystem of open-source AI models is expected to play an increasingly significant role in shaping the global artificial intelligence landscape while challenging the dominance of established Western AI developers.
