The NBA has created a new private equity division primarily focused on early-stage funding rounds in equipment, media, fan engagement, betting, and fantasy sports.
The division could also look to invest in later-stage deals if there is a strategic alignment.
The NBA is moving away from passive, opportunistic investments in favor of a more formal operation that will boost the value of its portfolio and identify innovations to improve basketball.
The NBA has nearly 20 companies in its portfolio, including investments in major firms like data provider Sportradar, blockchain fantasy game specialist Sorare and apparel firm New Era.,with stakes totaling US$1 billion.
The 2022 intake focused on ankle injury innovation, elite youth player performance, referee training and development, and youth health and wellness.
