With 15 seasons under its belt, fans are speculating on whether Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon) is ready to take a step forward in his career sometime in “NCIS” season 16. The departure of beloved characters and the addition of new ones leave fans with questions about the future of the show's long-standing characters. Thankfully, the show's last installment sets up “NCIS” season 16 to be in a perfect place to think about Leroy Gibbs's career advancement.
Leon Vance's (Rocky Carroll) rescue in the “NCIS” season 16 premiere episode may have rippling effects for Leroy Gibbs and his team. The NCIS special agents were all put in a situation where they were forced to push themselves in positions they were not comfortable with. But with Vance still in recovery, “NCIS” season 16's next couple of episodes may still ask a bit more flexibility from them.
As of “NCIS” season 16's upcoming episode, Director Vance is still in rehabilitation for the injuries he sustained after his captivity. The summary for the show's upcoming third episode, titled “Boom,” mentions that Vance is still undergoing physical therapy while the rest of the NCIS team pursues an investigation about a recent bomb explosion. While Gibbs merely assumed the role of acting-director when Vance was held hostage, fans can agree that he and his team handled the rescue of Leon Vance particularly well in "NCIS" season 16's premiere episode.
Fans can potentially expect Leon Vance's condition to get better but not up to par with his original vigor. While such a direction does not necessarily mean that Rocky Carroll's character has to be written out of the show, it does give some space for Leroy Gibbs to take on some responsibilities originally handled by the much more senior Vance. This could also open up a new slot for more special agents to join the "NCIS" season 16 ranks.
Fans looking forward to seeing how the Leroy Gibbs and the current cast of “NCIS” season 16 characters continue to grow can catch the show's next episode when it airs during its regular Tuesday schedule on Oct. 9.
