NVidia Just Made It Easier for the Robot Overlords to Conquer Humanity, Sort Of

At the 2018 Computex event, famed GPU giant NVidia unveiled a new technology that basically made it easier to create “smart” robots. One of them is a computer that was specifically designed for designing robots. The other is a developer platform that allows for the development, testing, and refinement of machine intelligence in robots. Essentially, NVidia might have just paved the way for the machines to take over.

In its press release regarding this new, potentially apocalypse-driving technology, NVidia revealed some key details about the Jetson Xavier and the Isaac Robotics Software. The former is the aforementioned computer that is supposed to make the creation of intelligent robots easier, while the latter is the developer platform. Together, they form NVIDIA Isaac.

The release also includes the speech by the company’s founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, when he unveiled the new technology during his Computex appearance.

“AI is the most powerful technology force of our time. Its first phase will enable new levels of software automation that boost productivity in many industries,” Huang had said. “Next, AI, in combination with sensors and actuators, will be the brain of a new generation of autonomous machines. Someday, there will be billions of intelligent machines in manufacturing, home delivery, warehouse logistics and much more.”

Regarding the Jetson Xavier, NVidia notes that it’s the heart of the operation. It apparently contains nine billion transistors and delivers a whopping 30 trillion operations per second (TOPS).

The Isaac Robotics Software is made up of three categories, which include the SDK, the IMX, and the Sim. The first is basically a selection of APIs needed to create the programming framework of intelligent machines. The IMX is a collection of algorithms developed by NVidia for robotics. The last category is a virtual simulation for testing and refining designs.

The best part about this revelation is the price tag of $1,299. The company plans to release the package in August.

As Futurism notes, if this offering is as promising as it sounds, it could lead to an explosion in robotics innovations and development. It’s basically like when the internet allowed people to become famous without ever needing to go to Hollywood or commit a horrible crime.
