“Narcos” season 4, or officially “Narcos: Mexico,” is obviously taking fans to a new playing field in the world of drug mobs and the law enforcement officers trying to stop them. The series shifts its focus to the Guadalajara Cartel with operations that are obviously based in Mexico.
In the past three seasons, this Netflix Original series focused on the Medellin and Cali cartels, the former led by Pablo Escobar, and was based in Colombia. The seasons also covered the stories of Escobar’s successors and how their empire thrived under new leadership. However, major changes are in order for “Narcos” season 4.
At first, Netflix planned to go on with the franchise through “Narcos” season 4's release. But it was confirmed last July that the entertainment company ordered a total reset of the series, resulting in “Narcos: Mexico."
Upon visiting the series’s Netflix preview page, the upcoming season is already referred to as season 1 for “Narcos: Mexico.” This reset in “Narcos” season 4 also calls for an all-new cast and will be seen in the continuation of the story and Javier Pena’s (Pedro Pascal) screen time coming to an end.
Replacing Pena is DEA Agent Kiki Camarena, portrayed by Michael Peña. Meanwhile, the drug cartel boss fans will be following in “Narcos” season 4 is Felix Gallardo, played by Diego Luna.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Narcos” season 4 will be digging into the early beginnings of the drug cartel in Mexico, which is believed to have had a huge influence on the current drug trafficking dilemma in real life.
Almost similar to Escobar’s story in the series, “Narcos” season 4 will depict how Gallardo played the big part in persuading formerly disorganized drug traffickers in Mexico into operating under a unified code as one empire. With that, it is likely that the reset series will still make some references to the stories laid out in the first three seasons of "Narcos." The filming of the series was also transferred to Mexico which, unfortunately, led to the death of one production crew member in 2017.
Netflix has yet to announce the official release date for “Narcos” season 4 a.k.a. “Narcos: Mexico." But its official page states that the series will start airing in 2018.
