The Uncharted series has had a lot of iconic characters, but none are more so than Nathan Drake, the franchise’s protagonist. Uncharted 4 was meant to be the last numbered installment in the series and Drake’s final appearance. Although Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is coming, the famed adventurer will not be returning.
Although The Lost Legacy is still part of the Uncharted universe and features characters that have long been part of the series, the developers concluded that the main game wrapped up the story nicely. In a PlayStation Blog, writer Josh Scherr talked about the expansion story and revealed that Drake’s appearance was under consideration. It was scrapped simply because the series protagonist’s part was given an excellent conclusion and bringing him back would take away from that.
“We entertained a few possible ideas around including Nate as a secondary character,” Scherr said. “But everything we did felt superfluous because we tied it all up with Uncharted 4.”
The game’s director, Kurt Margenau went even further and said that they are “not going to touch on Nathan Drake in this, at all,” which does carry a note of finality that people just can’t deny now. Nathan Drake is no longer in the picture and fans will just have to deal with that fact.
So, if the witty, wall-scaling adventurer is not in the game, what exactly can players look forward to in The Lost Legacy? Well, there’s Chloe Frazer, for starters.
The upcoming title is considered an expansion but isn’t really tied to the story of the first in a way that people expect, Polygon reports. As a standalone tale, it makes sense that Naughty Dog would want the attention of players to be centered on the two women featured in the game.
It also offers a refreshing take on a series that was predominantly male-oriented. While it’s understandable that this is the case in past games since Drake is the main character, it is a nice change to play female adventurers that are just as capable as their male counterparts.
