For the majority of tech companies, artificial intelligence is being used to combat the spread of fake news. However, some scientists decided to create an AI that could actually make the proliferation of fraudulent content infinitely worse. This is due to a machine that can actually manufacture a fake speech by someone, which could also include a world leader.
The very nature of diplomacy is the dependence on using the right words, tones, and gestures to make sure that everything ends as peacefully as possible. However, thanks to a new AI by researchers at the University of Washington, a world leader’s speech might end up with very different words than originally intended, The Register notes.
If for example, the president of the United States was to be seen on video declaring war against another country, there is a chance that it could lead to an actual conflict. This is not what the scientists were intending when they created the AI, of course, but scientists have lost control of their inventions in the past when invested elements act on their agendas.
Even if this new technology does not lead to World War III, it could still lend itself to the proliferation of fake news quite well. After all, if there is footage of a politician saying something inflammatory, there is always a chance that it would be taken seriously. It doesn’t even matter if the statement was manufactured by a machine. There will be those who will believe the worst in their opponents.
Based on the footage released of the capabilities of this technology, the implications are quite clear. Someone who is dedicated and resourceful enough could produce fake videos with alarmingly convincing elements.
The team behind the research are hoping that this new technology can actually be used constructively, The Verge reports. For example, it could be used to improve video chatting services like Skype. Unfortunately, the results may be out of their hands if this technology is released.
