The SNES Classic isn’t even out yet and already, there are indications that Nintendo could be producing N64 Classics down the road. This is what publications are interpreting from trademark filings that the company recently made with regards to game controllers. Based on the images, the controller is clearly that of the N64.
The images were first noticed and posted by users over at NeoGAF along with the specific classifications that Nintendo is trademarking the controllers under. The filing was done at the European Union Intellectual Property Office as well.
Reminiscent to the recent trademarks filed by the Japanese video game company before that are indicative of the Classics line, there’s no mistaking that Nintendo is at least thinking about offering the N64 as a mini emulator with built-in games. There’s no guarantee that it’s even going to happen, Polygon points, and trademark or patent filings are never an assurance of an upcoming product.
The publication contacted Nintendo to comment on the matter and the company responded that it had nothing to say about it for now. This isn’t exactly a yes, but if the company wasn’t working on an N64 in the first place, it would have been an outright no.
Over at Forbes, the publication is putting its money on the console coming to the market. Nintendo is currently making a lot of money on the Classic line of products and the revamped retro consoles are clearly in-demand. Heck, some gamers are still grumbling that they never got their hands on the discontinued NES Classic and the upcoming SNES model is already sold out in some places.
It would be odd for Nintendo to not cash in a product that is likely to be highly sought after, which will make them a lot of money, and won’t be that hard to make. So, while it’s healthy to look at this development with a huge dose of skepticism, there’s no point denying the possibility either.
