The Call of Duty franchise started as a story-driven first-person shooter that became popular for not only simulating actual, historical combat but the challenges that the soldiers of those battles had to overcome. In a recent report, it seems the developers of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 are dumping the series roots to focus solely on multiplayer.
In a report by Polygon, it would seem that sources with knowledge on the matter have told the publication about the absence of a single-player in the next Black Ops game. If so, it would be the first main game in the franchise to focus solely on multiplayer. Apparently, this wasn’t the original plan and only became necessary because completing the story mode wasn’t possible by launch date.
So instead, Treyarch decided to simply expand the game’s multiplayer aspect, putting particular emphasis on the ever popular zombie mode of the series. By doing so, the developers are reportedly hoping to fill the absence of the single-player campaign.
“We don’t comment on rumor and speculation. We look forward to revealing Black Ops 4 on May 17th,” an Activision spokesperson said when Polygon reached out for a comment.
In addition, there are also rumors that might be related to this particular development, wherein Black Ops 4 will come with a Battle Royale mode. This was according to famed COD intelligence resource, Charlie Intel, which posted about information that it got from a source recently.
Considering the popularity of the Battle Royale genre right now, it really wouldn’t be that surprising if the game did feature such a mode. More to the point, if it is getting rid of the campaign in favor of such a mode, it might draw in new players who are interested in what Activision’s 100 PVP offering might look like.
