After a prolonged hiatus, Lionsgate finally addressed the production of the third film with the announcement that a new screenwriter has been hired for “Now You See Me 3.” The studio may have also dropped subtle hints at the possibility of going for a reboot route for the upcoming movie.
‘Now You See Me 3’ plot: New screenwriter delivers ‘fresh take’ with ‘key returning cast’
Fans cannot be blamed if they thought for a moment that the “Now You See Me 3” project has been scrapped. It has been years since Lionsgate talked about the threequel until the studio came out with an important announcement in April.
Oscar-nominated screenwriter Eric Warren Singer, known for the star-studded comedy crime film “American Hustle,” was confirmed to pen the script of “Now You See Me 3.” Fans will have to look deeper into Lionsgate’s choice of words in explaining why Singer was ultimately chosen for the job.
“He came to us with a great story that takes the mythology of ‘Now You See Me’ and pushes The Four Horsemen to a whole new level with our key returning cast and new characters,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Nathan Kahane said. Reports also took note of Lionsgate’s press release that mentioned Singer was hired with the goal of offering a “fresh take” on the movie series without completely leaving out the essence of the first two films.
While “key returning cast” was mentioned, the same press released reportedly mentioned the potential plot of “Now You See Me 3” could be built to just create opportunities for the original cast to appear. The latter sounds more like having the main cast from the first installments is not the top priority moving forward. This then leads to speculations that the upcoming film might feel more like a reboot than an absolute sequel.
‘Now You See Me 3’ release date might still be years away
Various reports pointed out that the cast of “Now You See Me 3” has not been finalized yet. The same press release also did not provide other key details such as who is going to direct the movie.
This suggests that Lionsgate has only settled the making of the script, if that is the real case, it could mean that “Now You See Me 3” is still ways away before getting released. Fans loyal to the movie series should be ready to wait another year or more for it to complete production and arrive on the big screen.
