‘Ocean’s Eight’ is a spin-off of the original ‘Ocean’s Trilogy’ that is set to feature an all-star female ensemble that includes Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway. Matt Damon, who starred in the original films, revealed his support for the new film calling it “fantastic”. Meanwhile, Hathaway expressed her excitement over starring alongside Rihanna.
During an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival while attending the premiere of his new film ‘Manchester By the Sea’, Damon expressed his enthusiasm over the all-female spin-off of the ‘Ocean’s Trilogy’.
According to Just Jared, Damon admitted that he “can’t wait” to watch the new film directed by Gary Ross. He said, “I think it’s going to be awesome… I think it’s gonna be fantastic.”
Damon starred in the three films in the ‘Ocean’s Trilogy’ as the criminal specialist Linus Caldwell. Linus is a naive yet highly skilled pickpocket drafted into the criminal team by created by con-man and master thief Danny Ocean, portrayed by George Clooney. Damon was first introduced as Linus in the first film ‘Ocean’s Eleven’, directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Jerry Weintraub.
Soderbergh’s first film in the trilogy was a remake of the original 1960s film of the same name. Upon its release in December 2001, it was well-received by critics and was deemed a mainstream and financial success. According to Box Office Mojo, ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ earned $450.71 million worldwide on a production budget of $85 million.
The sequels ‘Ocean’s Twelve’ and ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’ followed in 2004 and 2007, respectively. The subsequent films were also deemed commercially successful despite receiving mixed reviews from critics.
Ross’ upcoming female-led spin-off is set to star an ensemble cast that includes Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Elizabeth Banks, and Rihanna. Sarah Paulson of ‘American Horror Story’ fame is also rumored as part of the new cast.
During an interview with E! News, Hathaway gushed over co-star Rihanna after being asked how she felt with starring alongside the international pop sensation. She joked, "No, she's terrible. It's like, 'Ugh, do I have to?'"
Hathaway continued, "Rihanna and I did Saturday Night Live a few years ago and she was gorgeous in every way you can be gorgeous… I'm excited that we're going to get to hang out in the makeup trailer and trade tips and get to know each other better."
‘Ocean’s Eight’ is an upcoming comedy heist film directed by Gary Ross. It is intended as a spin-off of the original ‘Ocean’s Trilogy’ and will connect with 2001’s ‘Ocean’s Eleven’. Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney will produce the new film with Bruce Berman, Susan Ekins, and Michael Tardoss serving as executive producers.
The film is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2017.
