OpenAI is reportedly developing a new code-hosting platform that could eventually compete with Microsoft’s GitHub, according to a recent report citing sources familiar with the initiative. The project is still in its early stages, but it reflects the company’s growing interest in building internal infrastructure that supports its rapidly expanding development operations.

The effort is partly driven by ongoing service disruptions and outages that OpenAI engineers have encountered while using GitHub. These interruptions have occasionally slowed development workflows, prompting internal discussions about reducing reliance on external platforms for repository hosting and collaboration. By creating its own system, OpenAI aims to improve reliability and maintain tighter control over the tools used by its engineering teams.

Sources suggest the platform is currently being designed primarily for internal use. If completed, it would allow OpenAI developers to manage source code, track changes, collaborate on projects, and maintain repositories without depending heavily on third-party services. The initiative aligns with a broader trend among large technology companies to develop in-house developer tools that can better integrate with their proprietary systems.

Although the platform is still in a nascent phase, some discussions within OpenAI have explored the possibility of eventually offering the service to external users. If that happens, the tool could position itself as a potential alternative to GitHub and other popular code-hosting services such as GitLab and Bitbucket. However, insiders indicate that any public release would likely be far in the future.

At this stage, the project remains experimental and could take several months or longer before it reaches a functional launch. It may ultimately remain an internal platform designed specifically to support OpenAI’s software development ecosystem.

As artificial intelligence companies scale their engineering operations, the need for stable, efficient developer infrastructure continues to grow. OpenAI’s exploration of its own code-hosting solution highlights how major tech firms are increasingly investing in tools that give them greater control over critical development workflows.
