‘Outlander’ season 3 will feature Jamie and Claire as they embark on an adventurous sea voyage. Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe were recently photograph on the filming set on-board a massive ship as they joked around behind-the-scenes. Meanwhile, executive producer Matthew Roberts recently announced that he has finally finished writing the script to the much-anticipated third season of the historical time-travel television series.
According to Goldderby, a new on-set photograph posted on Instagram teased Sam Heughan’s Jamie MacKenzie Fraser and Caitriona Balfe’s Claire Randall/Fraser going on an adventurous sea voyage. It is clear that the two stars were joking around behind-the-scenes.
Heughan put his arm up as if his character was looking beyond the horizon while Balfe looked at him with a huge smile on her face as she held a modern-day cup of coffee. The two were clearly on an old-century ship as the ship’s massive sails behind them were apparent. The Instagram post was captioned “Is that a sail thru coffee place…”
The upcoming season is set to feature a long sea journey for the series’ main protagonists. The season is based on Diana Gabaldon’s third novel, titled “Voyager,” in the ‘Outlander’ series. Cast and crew transferred filming locations from Scotland to South Africa, where the seafaring scenes will be filmed.
Balfe expressed her excitement for the location change during a previous interview saying, “Sunshine, vineyards. It’s beautiful. I was lucky enough to go there about 10 years ago, and Cape Town is so stunning. Just being there will be amazing.”
Filming for season 3 is expected to end by May, ahead of the season’s scheduled return on Starz sometime in September. According to The Scottish Sun, executive producer Matthew Roberts revealed through Twitter on April 8 that he was done writing the script for season 3. Roberts posted, “Just wrote -- FADE OUT #Outlander S3 Now my search for typos begins. #wishmeluck this may take awhile :-{)>”
Meanwhile, a spin-off is reportedly in the works and will focus on the fate of the Fraser clansmen in the aftermath of the historic Battle of Culloden.
‘Outlander’ season 3 is scheduled to premiere on Starz on September 2017.
