“Outlander” season 4 is now starting to look like a huge turning point for the Starz series. Lead actress Caitriona Balfe recently said there are no more cliffhangers between her character Claire and Jamie (Sam Heughan) and that the time-traveling couple is finally having a life together.
The stories prior to “Outlander” season 4 were filled with will they-won’t they arcs where fans were always puzzled if Claire and Jamie would be together. Luckily, this is one aspect that is going to change big time, according to Balfe.
The cast of “Outlander” season 4, along with showrunner Ronald D. Moore and author Diana Gabaldon, attended the New York Comic-Con last week. At the event, Balfe reiterated that there will be so much growth in the relationship of Jamie and Claire in the upcoming season.
“This season there is such a contentment of the two of them being together. You see them have a life together,” the actress said about “Outlander” season 4. “There are always going to be external forces. I don’t think there are cliffhangers anymore as to whether they should be together.”
In another instance, Balfe explained to ELLE that Jamie and Claire will reach a “certain point” in “Outlander” season 4 where cliffhangers are not needed to test their love for one another. However, the actress hinted that there will still be disagreements and “cycles where [Jamie and Claire are] not always perfectly in sync.”
“But there’s no more cliffhangers with Jamie and Claire in terms of their love and devotion to each other [in “Outlander” season 4]. That’s important because otherwise, you start to manipulate an audience’s emotions too much,” Balfe further said.
Meanwhile, the release of “Outlander” season 4 — mostly set during the founding of America — happens at a time when TV shows are either applauded or criticized for their political references. In this show’s case, Moore said at the NYCC that it is “ultimately” about the characters and that they do not treat it as a “platform for political ideas.”
However, Moore added that in the making of “Outlander” season 4, “We can’t help but have what happens in the world inform what we do.” And though the showrunner said they do not intend to “preach to the audience,” Moore explained that the way they view current events around the world “can’t help but sort of influence [their] work."
Jamie and Claire will arrive in North Carolina in the premiere of “Outlander” season 4. This episode, titled “America the Beautiful,” airs on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 8 p.m. ET on Starz.
