It has been more than five months since the third season of “Overlord” concluded, but there are no announcements yet regarding “Overlord” season 4. The absence of new details ignites speculations that the anime series will have a much longer hiatus this time.
The making of “Overlord” season 4 has not been officially confirmed yet. However, most fans are certain that the anime series will be renewed for a fourth installment. One very telling clue is that the season 3 finale left the message, “And the story goes on.”
Now that the release of “Overlord” season 4 was already hinted by the anime producers, fans will only have to wait for the official announcement of its premiere date window. However, many are expecting that the anime series will not return in about three years so the said announcement might also not happen anytime soon.
Some suggest that the earliest possible release date of “Overlord” season 4 is sometime in late 2020. However, others deem an early 2021 premiere is more plausible for various reasons such as the available light novel series installments.
At the moment, there is a total of 13 volumes of light novel series — nine of which were already covered in the anime series. If “Overlord” season 4 would be released as quick as within a year, it might not give enough time for the publication of new light novel contents.
Releasing “Overlord” season 4 this year might also mean that the anime series would be uncomfortably close to where the original source material currently is in terms of the franchise's plot. As a general rule, it is highly advisable for printed materials to be distributed first and be in the market for a few years before offering adaptations such as anime episodes that fans can access and finish more quickly.
If the speculated 2021 release date of “Overlord” season 4 would tally, this is not the first years-long hiatus that the anime series will be going through. There was about three years gap between seasons 1 and 2 as well.
