Sony finally revealed key details for the upcoming launch of its next-generation PlayStation virtual reality headset. The PS VR2 is slated to arrive in stores in February next year, along with the all-new game "Horizon: Call of the Mountain."
PS VR2 release date, pre-orders
The company announced in a blog post on Tuesday that the PS VR2 will hit the shelves on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, in various regions around the world. Each box will contain the next-gen headset, the PS VR2 Sense controllers, and a pair of stereo headphones for $549.99 / €599.99 / £529.99 / ¥74,980.
Sony confirmed that the first-party charging dock for the PS VR2 Sense controllers will be available on the same day. But it will be sold separately for $49.99 / €49.99 / £39.99 / ¥5,480.
The PlayStation maker announced in the same post that players can pre-order the PS VR2 starting Nov. 15, but they can now register to line up for the product through this page. While demand for the PS VR2 is unlikely to be the same as when PS5 first came out, it would not hurt for avid VR gamers to secure a spot to pre-order the headset.
While the PS VR2 will be available in-store on the release date, Sony said orders made online should be expected to be delivered throughout the launch week. But Sony noted that only customers in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States can place orders through its online store or direct.playstation.com. Players in other territories will have to await announcements from local retailers that will sell the PS VR2.
The PS VR2 features design changes from its predecessor, including a new integrated flow to improve airflow. Sony also added a lens adjustment dial.
There are also notable upgrades hardware-wise, including new sensors to track eye movement. The PS VR2 will also deliver a higher fidelity of 2000 x 2040 resolution per eye. Sony is bringing the fan-favorite haptic feedback feature from the PS5 DualSense controller to the VR headset.
PS VR2 games
The PS VR2 launch title "Horizon: Call of the Mountain," developed with Firesprite, will launch on the same date. Sony will also offer a bundle of the headset with a PS Store voucher code for the game for an additional $50. Most of the plot details are still under wraps, but it is confirmed to introduce new characters, including its own protagonist named Ryas.
Sony has announced a list of AAA games in development specifically for the PS VR2, including "No Man's Sky," "The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution," and "Resident Evil Village." But release dates for these games are still under wraps.
