The classic PlayStation 1 console was home to some of the best video game franchises to have ever been released. Properties like Final Fantasy 7 and Crash Bandicoot rose to fame on those platforms, as well as a series called Siphon Filter. This third-person spy franchise helped to define the PS1 era and now there are rumors that it could be coming back.
This rumor came via a Tweet on Gematsu’s official account, which indicates that Sony just filed a trademark for Siphon Filter in Europe. Those who remember the glory days of the PS1 immediately latched on to the post, which also contained an image of the trademark filing document.

As to why gamers should care about a game that hasn’t made an appearance for years, it’s because the move could signal the return of the franchise, which was beloved by action game fans. For context, Siphon Filter is basically a game that was part 007 and part Metal Gear Solid.
It had an excellent blend of action, gameplay elements, story, and voice acting. Developed by the studio that was then known as Eidetic, the first game came out in 1999. Since then, the franchise has released several iterations, with the last one coming out in 2007 for the PS2 and PSP, Comicbook.com reports.
For now, this is just a rumor since nothing has been confirmed by Sony. In fact, some are suggesting that this could simply be the company’s way of retaining ownership of the series, just in case.
On the other hand, the PS4 has seen multiple revivals of classic games released on previous versions of the console, with the most notable being Crash Bandicoot: N.Sane Trilogy. If Sony is planning on bringing Siphon Filter back, it will likely come as a remaster of some sort, much like what happened to the PS1 mascot’s franchise.
