Mars is generally considered an incredibly inhospitable planet but less dangerous to organic life than the rest of the universe. As such, it’s become the target of colonization efforts both in the real world and in the realm of video games. Paradox is publishing one such game called “Surviving Mars,” where players will try to build a civilization while competing with the unforgiving environment.
Paradox is a well-known publishing company, largely associated with survival and micromanagement games such as Crusader Kings and Hearts of Iron, Kotaku reports. The next title on its list is being developed by Haemimont Games and is expected to push the boundaries of survival gameplay that is generally aimed at so-called “Hardcore” players.
So far, the only things that people know about the game are the details that were shared via the trailer. As such, players know that it’s coming to the PC and consoles, will feature extremely challenging world-building elements, and will likely involve several hours of meticulous handling of minute details for an optimized civilization.
On the matter of actually creating a society on Mars, it’s a reflection of the general mood that the science and technology sector have with regards to space travel. Both government agencies and private companies are working feverishly to send people to the Red Planet and colonize it, even risking death in the process.
With regards to the actual mechanics themselves, however, it seems that the developers are going to focus more on the optimistic side of world-building rather than the gritty realism that is all too familiar with survival games. Speaking to Game Planet, Haemimont Games CEO Gabriel Dobrev noted how the game will heavily emphasize role-playing elements with regards to story-telling as well.
"We feel that strategy and management games are at their best when they let the player experience the unique story being told by their decisions, and Surviving Mars is going to have that in a big way,” Dobrev explained.
