Nigeria’s National Pension Commission (PenCom) urged small-business owners at a Lagos fair to strengthen financial controls and consider voluntary retirement savings, highlighting an option for people outside conventional employer-based plans.
The Oct. 27 gathering at Classique Events Place took place during National Pension Week. BusinessDay and BusinessToday described the guidance as combining day-to-day financial discipline with long-term preparation. Their reports said owners were encouraged to keep business records, separate household and company funds, and weigh reinvesting earnings alongside retirement saving.
BusinessDay reported that the appeal also sought to expand pension participation among entrepreneurs, self-employed professionals and informal-sector workers. Both outlets said PenCom urged employers to make required pension contributions on time, warning that late or missing payments may weaken workers’ retirement security.
The outlets differed over who spoke. BusinessDay identified Commissioner for Inspectorate Samuel Chigozie Uwandu as delivering the appeal, while BusinessToday reported that Director General Omolola Oloworaran made the remarks through Uwandu.
PenCom’s Personal Pension Plan (PPP) is a voluntary savings arrangement for self-employed people and other eligible contributors, including those in the informal sector. Participants use a Retirement Savings Account with a licensed Pension Fund Administrator and can contribute through approved banking and digital channels.
The PPP gives eligible individuals a personal route to retirement saving, while the reports’ advice to employers concerned contributions due for workers. The outlets presented the appeal as addressing retirement security for both business owners and employees through these different channels. PenCom’s plan description covers voluntary contributions; the reports described employer remittances as applicable when required.
For an owner who qualifies, the plan offers a way to build retirement savings through an individual account. For employees, the reports connected retirement security with employers meeting their pension obligations. BusinessDay said the appeal aimed to bring more entrepreneurs and informal-sector workers into pension coverage, alongside its advice on business finances.
