The first Pillars of Eternity video game by Obsidian was a major financial success and its sequel’s crowdfunding campaign had long since surpassed its initial goal of $1.1 million. Now that the developers have more than enough money to finish the game, they also decided to share a few details on what players can expect from Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.
As of writing this article, the crowdfunding for Deadfire sits at over $3.5 million. This is a 318 percent increase compared to the campaign’s original goal thanks to the 28,258 backers that have supported the project. With about 42 hours to go, it’s likely that there will be outlying contributors who will make that amount grow even more. In celebration of the huge event, Obsidian decided to share some details on one of the biggest features in the sequel via the page’s news section.
“Yes, we can finally confirm what we’ve been keeping secret this whole time: a new and exciting feature that takes the Pillars of Eternity experience to a completely new stage, which adds open-world exploration and discovery to the gameplay on both land and at sea!” the post reads. “As many of you guessed correctly, in Deadfire you can be the captain of your own ship. With ships, you have the power to play the game differently; now, you can freely explore the islands of the Deadfire using the new world map.”
The game’s director, Josh Sawyer also spoke with IGN in a phone interview. According to Sawyer, the stronghold in the first game disappointed quite a few gamers, which they have taken into account for the sequel. There is also the fact that Deadfire is set in an archipelago, which does make the prospect of a stationary base unappealing. As such, the ship, which is named “The Defiant,” makes much more sense.
