Sony is currently in a position to redefine console gaming as its PlayStation 5 is reportedly going to be quite the powerhouse. And even though the company has been reticent about its development, previous patent filings provide a lot of hints what Sony has in store for the next-gen system.
Perhaps the most intriguing feature of the PlayStation 5 is the inclusion of VR technology under its hood. According to Inverse, the upcoming console will have a VR-focused chipset that would allow the device to utilize wireless VR headset.
The Japanese Patent Office publishing a patent about this technology is a hint that gives weight to the claim. The question now becomes: will the PlayStation 5 be able to pull off such a feature without players experiencing lag during game time? It appears that it can.
The patent that was filed featured an illustration where the wireless VR headset is connected to the PlayStation 5 and a mounted TV camera. The headset would communicate with the console and camera at a 60GHz frequency, a speed that would eliminate data delay between the wireless connection.
In an attempt to ensure that the 60GHz speed would indeed deliver a lag-free experience, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers tested the data exchange and found that it can transfer 4-5 Gbps. This is quite the promising news for the PlayStation 5 and will likely set the foundation what wireless VR gaming will look in the future.
Another feature that the PlayStation 5 will apparently have is backward compatibility, which allows the console to play games that are only exclusives to its respective predecessors. This is another good news for PlayStation owners as they can revisit timeless classics with the PlayStation 5 without much hassle. As for when the next-generation console will hit the market, analysts are convinced that a 2020-2021 release date is the most likely possibility.
