Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed on Sunday that Ukraine breached a temporary ceasefire by carrying out drone and artillery attacks against Russian forces, according to reports from Interfax news agency. Moscow stated that despite the alleged attacks, Russian troops continued to observe the U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement.
The ministry said Russian air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 57 Ukrainian drones within the last 24 hours. Officials also noted that Russian forces responded to Ukraine’s actions “in kind,” using multiple launch rocket systems and mortars to target Ukrainian positions.
The accusations come as tensions remain high along the front lines, with both sides reporting continued military activity despite international efforts to reduce hostilities. Russia maintained that its military actions were defensive responses to repeated Ukrainian strikes during the ceasefire period.
Meanwhile, Ukraine accused Russia of violating the same ceasefire arrangement by launching drone attacks and engaging in nearly 150 battlefield clashes over the past day. Ukrainian officials said Russian forces continued offensive operations in several combat zones, raising doubts about the effectiveness of the truce.
The ceasefire was reportedly backed by the United States as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce escalation in the conflict. However, conflicting statements from Moscow and Kyiv suggest that fighting has not fully stopped on the ground.
Reuters stated that it could not independently verify the battlefield claims made by either Russia or Ukraine.
The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war continues to draw international attention as ceasefire violations, drone warfare, and artillery exchanges complicate peace negotiations. Analysts say the situation highlights the fragile nature of temporary truces in one of the world’s most closely watched conflicts.
