“Mario Kart” and “Fortnite” are two video game properties that couldn’t be more different. One is a cutesy racing game and the other is a murder-mayhem simulator without the blood and gore. Thanks to the new “Fortnite” Playground mode that was just launched, however, players were able to bring these two properties together. Yes, someone made “Mario Kart” racing tracks in “Fortnite.”
As Kotaku notes, the Playground mode was intended to be where new players could come to familiarize themselves with the rules and gameplay of “Fortnite” before joining the main fray in “Battle Royale.” However, the launch of the new feature also ended up unleashing the creative might of the gaming community.
One example is the so-called “Tilted Track,” which is a series of tracks inspired by the “Mario Kart” racing franchise. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t allow actual karts to be driven in the game. Instead, players have to get even more creative and race with shopping carts.
Looking at the video clip posted by the Reddit user JoshB_C, viewers can see racers zooming through a maze-like structure while riding shopping carts like they were scooters. The superbly creative nature of the building is only compounded by the fact that it is temporary. The Playground mode only lasts an hour, after all.
These “Mario Kart” racing tracks in “Fortnite” are not the only creative things that players got up to while taking the Playground mode out for a spin either. Engadget features some other impressive monoliths created by players with the short amount of time they had.
Some players built an actual statue that looked like 8-bit Link from “The Legend of Zelda” franchise, for example. Others created a reimagining of Loot Lake, and it’s downright gorgeous.
At this point, it’s clear that the Epic Games title has spawned a lot of surprising and unexpected trends within the industry. Things like “Mario Kart” racing tracks in “Fortnite” are just the tip of the iceberg.
