Porsche has issued a recall for all 2023 Taycan models due to a battery sealant problem, raising concerns about potential fires. Audi, with a similar platform, also announced a recall. Combined, thousands of vehicles in North America are affected.
Audi also issued a recall for the E-Tron GT, which shares its platform with the Taycan. Both automakers have decided to recall 4777 Taycans and 1899 E-Trons in the United States and Canada.
These vehicles were built between September 2022 and last month. Approximately 3 percent of them are estimated to be affected.
The remedy involves bringing the affected vehicles to a dealer for battery sealant inspection. If the sealant is deemed insufficient, the battery will be replaced entirely. Dealerships have already started notifying customers, and both Porsche and Audi will officially inform their customers of the recall on October 31.
The recall notice submitted by Porsche to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that the company began receiving reports of insufficient insulation in March 2023. Later on, during an examination prompted by a dashboard warning message, two Taycans were found to have insufficient sealant. On the other hand, Audi has not received any reports of vehicle issues.
Porsche and Audi have mentioned that the battery supplier has introduced an improved sealant. But both have decided to recall the vehicles built after this improvement was implemented to ensure customer safety.
Porsche clarified that there have been no reports of fires caused by this issue, and they are proactively recalling the affected vehicles as a precautionary measure. If moisture enters the battery pack, drivers will be alerted via warning symbols on the car's display. To carry out the recall, Porsche aims to test the battery seal of the vehicles manufactured between September 22, 2022, and August 3, 2023.
Selling a car with an open recall is illegal, and dealerships must resolve the issue before selling the vehicles. The exact timeline for completing the recall before the October 31 owner notification date remains unclear.
